What to do in Edinburgh in the spring

Virgin Hotels Edinburgh’s guide to spring in the city

The flush of spring sunshine is always a welcome return in Edinburgh. As the cherry blossoms bloom and the air warms up, it’s time to embrace one of the calmest times of year in the Scottish capital.

What to see in Edinburgh’s Old Town

The best of Edinburgh’s Old Town is discovered outdoors, so visiting during the city’s warmer months helps you see them at their best. The Royal Mile is an excellent starting point, but don’t miss out on nipping down any side streets, or closes, that catch your eye.

Some must-see stops include Greyfriars Bobby, St Giles Cathedral, and – of course – Edinburgh Castle itself. If the weather lives up to Edinburgh’s reputation, Mary King’s Close offers not just shelter but also a fascinating trip into the past of Edinburgh’s hidden street.

The rainbow of Edinburgh

Victoria Street

Victoria Street isn’t just home to Virgin Hotels Edinburgh but a wealth of other restaurants, shops, and locales. Stop in at Knoops or Blank Street Coffee for an iced drink to take on the go, or snag a sunspot at Howies or wander down Grassmarket to find a cosy beer garden. It’s all just moments away from your room.

Perfect for families

With all this on your doorstep, Virgin Hotels Edinburgh is a great base for a family city break. Our nearby neighbours, the National Museum of Scotland and Camera Obscura, have dedicated exhibitions and activities for kids to learn about science, history, and nature.

Plus, for the more active youngsters, Edinburgh’s Meadows is just down the road. The city park has quaint tree-lined paths, open grassy fields, and a stunning view of Arthur’s Seat to make an excellent backdrop for picnics.

The Meadows

The Meadows

Edinburgh in the springtime is marked by the cherry blossoms lining our streets and parks. Just five minutes from the hotel, the Meadows are coated in pink and white cherry blossoms - a must-see at this time of year.

Dr Neill's Garden

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle

A must-see in Edinburgh, the castle is particularly impressive when spring brings clear blue skies. Local tip: time your visit to Edinburgh Castle for 1pm and make sure you're in the outdoor courtyard to see the real-life cannon go off.

Eve's Courtyard

Eve's Courtyard

As well as having the whole city on your doorstep, guests can enjoy our very own slice of sunshine in Eve’s courtyard – still sheltered from any brisk spring breezes – or take some bubbles up to our rooftop terrace to enjoy our Old Town views.
